Pest Birds
Here at Regis we carry out a lot of work protecting property against pest birds.
Predominantly we install various forms of bird proofing, but we also offer a falconry and hawking service to those requiring it.
The most common pest bird species are Pigeons, Seagulls, Starlings, Sparrows, Crows, House Martins (Swallows and Swifts)
Bird proofing options include; Bird Spikes, Bird Netting, Bird Posts and Wire, Bird Scarer’s, Bird Repellents, Chimney Guards and Bird Decoys, so contact us for advice on the most apt solution and a price for the supply and fitting of the pest bird solution.
Chimneys
We can prevent pest birds from nesting on top of chimneys by the installation of bird spikes or chimney cowls but in cases where there is a persistent bird problem the entire chimney probably needs to be encased in a customised weld-mesh cage.
In situations where birds are nesting between the chimney stack and the roof apex it is better to prevent them from accessing the area using bird netting, other forms of protection such as bird spikes are likely to be covered with materials such as twigs and rubbish so limiting their effect.
Window Ledges
Pigeons and Seagulls perching on window ledges can cause a nuisance with their noise and droppings. Crows and Magpies will also attack their reflections in windows causing damage to the window. Bird spikes can be installed to protect the window sill and prevent birds from landing. If the window needs to be opened then specially designed window clips can be used to allow the spikes to move with the window. Alternatively, post and wire or bird repellent gel can be installed along the window ledge to deter the birds from landing.
Light-wells and Courtyards
Pigeons are a common problem in courtyards and light-wells causing a nuisance and a potential health hazard with their droppings. For light to medium pest infestations bird spikes, post and wire, electrical track and bird repellent can be used on the features within the courtyard or light-well that the pigeons are roosting in. Decoys can also be used to deter the pest birds from the area. in situations of heavy infestation the area should be netted off.
Dormer Roofs
Seagulls are a common problem on dormer roofs, making their nests and noisily fighting over territory. In certain instances Daddi Long Legs Rotating Bird Spiders can be installed to disturb the birds and prevent them from landing on the roof. For areas where the seagulls have been nesting for some time it is best to net the roof using 75mm translucent seagull netting and non-piercing flat roof mounts to hold the netting away from the surface of the roof so denying the seagulls access to the area.
Solar Panels
Solar panels are becoming increasingly common on roofs. Pigeons and other pest birds can cause problems by roosting on the edge of the panel and fouling the surface or nesting behind the panel, to prevent this bird spikes can be installed around the edge of the panels to prevent birds from using them as a roosting spot, and weld mesh or bird netting can be used to prevent birds from getting behind the solar panels and making nests.
Ultrasonic or bio-acoustic deterrents will prevent birds from congregating in the area and keep them away from the solar panels.
Air Conditioning Units
Pigeons nesting behind air conditioning units can cause damage to the units and pose a health risk to employees from the pigeons droppings fouling the unit. Air conditioning units can be protected by installing pigeon netting over the units, preventing the pest birds from nesting in the area. In situations where access is required steel mesh panels can be utilised.
ETfe Roofs
Seagulls damage ETfe roofs by tearing the membrane, often requiring costly repairs. A suitable bio-acoustic bird scaring system can be installed to keep seagulls away from the roof and preventing them from nesting or roosting in the area. Bio-acoustic bird scarer’s exploit a bird’s in-built reaction to hearing its own species-specific distress call, causing it to flee the hostile environment beyond the audible range of the distress call. we can supply and fit a comprehensive range of distress call systems that will cover any requirement, both outdoor and indoor as either a stand-alone deterrent or as part of an overall programme of bird control.
Industrial Roofs
Nesting seagulls and pigeons can be a problem on industrial roofs with their debris and droppings causing damage to the roof and a health hazard for employees. For light infestations a bio-acoustic deterrent and visual decoy will keep the pest birds from nesting in the area. Visual deterrents are designed to awaken a natural response of in-built fear that is present within pest birds and is triggered by a visual replica of a predator bird. For heavier infestations the roof will probably need to be protected by a netting system supported by roof mounts. The netting can be installed in a way that enables easy access to the roof for the maintenance of equipment. Netting mounts are used to lift or suspend the bird netting above the surface sufficiently high to prevent the pest birds pushing the netting down onto the surface and landing on it. Dependent upon access requirements we offer mounts that can lift the net just enough to provide adequate protection or enough height to allow for maintenance access beneath the net.
Ledges and Parapets
Pigeons like to roost on ledges and cornicing and behind parapet walls taking advantage of the shelter that they provide. For light bird infestations ledges, cornices and parapet walls can be protected using ultrasonic deterrents and bird repellent gel. For medium to heavy bird infestations bird spikes should be installed or alternatively a post and wire system can be installed for a reduced visual impact. For heavy infestations bird netting should be installed to protect the area.
Loading Bays and Canopies
Loading bays are a popular spot for pigeons and other pest birds to nest and roost. Often posing a health risk to employees from their droppings and debris. For light pest infestations an ultrasonic deterrent can provide a simple method to keep birds from roosting inside loading bays and canopies. For heavy bird infestations the roof of the loading bay or canopy should be protected using netting to prevent the pest birds from getting into the roof and being able to land and nest on the roof beams.
Warehouses and Industrial Units
Pest birds in warehouses and industrial units can cause damage to machinery and stock and pose a health risk to employees from their droppings. For light pest infestations an ultrasonic deterrent can provide a simple method to keep birds from roosting inside the unit. For heavy bird infestations the ceiling of the building should be protected using netting to prevent the pest birds from getting into the roof and being able to land and nest in the roof beams.
Parapet Box Guttering
Seagulls and pigeons nesting in box guttering can cause the gutter to be blocks by their droppings and debris. This can result in property damage and a health hazard from dead birds and guano. Parapet box guttering should be protected using netting or weld mesh to prevent pest birds from accessing the area and fouling or blocking the gutter.
Pipework
Pipework can provide a convenient roosting spot for feral pigeons and the resultant mess can result in property damage and health risks. Protect pipework by installing bird spikes along the length of the pipe and securing them with cable ties and adhesive. Alternatively, post and wire can be installed to prevent the birds from landing on the pipework.
Signage
Protect your signs from pigeon damage by attaching bird spikes along the top of the sign, alternatively, post and wire or bird repellent installed along the top of the sign will also prevent the pigeons from landing.
Street Lighting
Daddi Long Legs rotating bird spiders are ideal for protecting the tops of street lights from roosting seagulls and pigeons. The Daddi Long Legs can be attached by adhesive or screwed to the top of the light. Bird spikes can also be used to prevent pest birds from landing on the top of the lights.
Structural Steelwork
Structural steelwork can provide shelter and nesting sites for feral pigeons. Bird spikes can be installed along the top of the steelwork to prevent birds from landing and post and wire can be attached to the flanges of the beams to deter birds from roosting. Additionally, bird repellent can be applied to indoor beams.
Guano Removal Service
Bird droppings are a continual problem to anybody suffering from a pest bird infestation. We have a guano removal and clean-up service that covers you against the health and safety risks associated with contact with bird droppings, including respiratory disorders, disease transfer and slip hazards.
Bird Netting
We supply and use knotted netting of an appropriate size to deal with the pest bird species. Mesh is available in a range of sizes 75mm, 50mm, 40mm, 28mm and 19mm in standard UV stabilised high density polyethylene or flame retardant material. Colour choices are black, stone and translucent. The netting can be fitted utilising stainless steel or galvanised fittings. As a rule we utilise stainless steel fittings and recommend only using stainless steel and copper fittings in towns near the coast.
Bird Spikes
Bird spikes are a bird proofing system that is used to protect linear surfaces including ridge tiles, parapets, ledges, gutters, beams, pipes, signs and other similar features. The spikes are tall enough to make them longer than the pest birds leg, making it impossible for the bird to land in between the spikes without being affected by the spikes. We supply and fit bird spikes manufactured using durable grade 304 stainless steel and UV stabilised polycarbonate.
Post and Wire
Pigeon anti-perch spikes are used on flat narrow areas to prevent pigeons from perching and roosting, but in situations where the visual impact of the anti perching system is an important factor the Post and Wire system and the bird repellent can provide an effective solution. The Post and Wire system is also an economical method to use on deep ledges and sills where anti-perch spikes may be too costly and visually unappealing.
Bird repellents
Bird repellents come in three formats, repellent-liquid, repellent-gel and taste-aversion liquid. Repellent liquids are best used for protecting large surface areas, such as flat roofs or irregular shaped areas such as tree limbs. Gels are best used for protecting linear surfaces such as window ledges, cornices and ridge-lines.
